NOTE: Changed link to different fraction manipulative because we were having troubles getting Shodor to work on our computers because of Java issues.
Today, you'll finish up your Equivalent Fractions Packet using Illuminations Equivalent Fractions.
REMINDERS:
- You want to create fractions that LOOK equivalent... So you want to see that the areas of both match up. See how I filled in the top half of both the fractions in the example below? If I had filled up the bottom half or the right or left side, it would have been harder to see that they are equal. Don't get too creative! The point is to SEE the relationship easily.
- On your packet you show mathematical proof that the fractions are equivalent by multiplying or dividing-- "If you do it to the top, you also have to do it to the bottom."
- Sometimes you can't go directly from one fraction to another using multiplication or division. Instead, you can tell that the 2 fractions are equivalent because they are both equal to the same fraction (1/2, 1/3, or 2/3). For example, I can't turn 3/6 into 5/10... But I know that they're equivalent because I can turn each of them into 1/2 using division.
- You can and should change the shape occasional. Try out both the square and the circle. It's good for your brain to mix it up!
When you finish your Equivalent Fractions packet, you may work on the following activities in the following order. You'll need a neat sheet in order to multiply and divide to keep track of your work.
Do "Step-by-Step," including "Watch Out!" and "Try It!" Then "Test Yourself"
Is it harder to think about the lines?
What does it mean to "Rename Higher"? Were the pieces getting smaller or bigger? What operation were you using?
